I know that it is a stage of grief: first, I believe comes denial, then, comes acceptance…Ok..I have finally accepted that, through no fault of a myriad of fans who have enough components of Fluffernutters to last till 2012, that the nucleus of Law and Order: Criminal Intent is imploding. Sad to actually write it in print but Vincent D’Onofrio and Kathryn Erbe will no longer be show regulars as of March 2010.

When news first hit the airwaves in late September, that VDO was stepping away from the show, I remember walking into my husbands studio and announcing plans to cry. Now, since I have the reputation of being a flagrant dramatist, my husband assumed that perhaps we were out of dog food or that the temperature had dropped below 70. No crying wolf this time, I persisted, things were in tatters and the world was crumbling; Criminal Intent was cancelled..oh, excuse me, D’Onofrio was leaving (same thing). My husband knew the tear threat was serious now! How many times had he escaped his studio for moments to come and impart some words of affection upon his wife only to be shushed away and sent back to his small dark hovel? Being that I hade Criminal Intent sensor, that could be at anytime of day, for, like CNN, L&O could usually be found somewhere on the myriad of cable channels at some time of day. Although I have seen most episode countless amounts of time, the eccentricities of Robert Goren never grow old. I will say though, this past season’s descent into some pseudo- psycho outbursts and flagrant depiction of that guy who you crossed the street to avoid archetype, I could have done without. I missed the flirty Nicole Wallace obsessed detective and ever being the optomist, had hoped that Nicole’s twin sisietr’s DNA was that found out the deadly death of the nemesis crime scene and that Nicole would again rear her Psycho-Killer hottie head.Hey..I am still convinced that Judd Nelson and Molly Ringwald went to Shermer High prom together! Alas, this was not to be true because some jackass with a pen, or keyboard decided Bobby needed closure so decided to decimate all loved ones..including Nicole (oh please..we all know he had a little killer crush on her) and clean his slate. Wait..who did this?? Who can sleep at night after that? It certainly wasn’t Belcar because THAT was a writer. No no..it was these people from USA/NBC who decide to shake up and shake down our favorite show. I blame them completely. If the scripts were better, no one would be leaving. If Dick Wolf asserted more of his creative clout, we would be eagerly awaiting March! Hey, Goldblum is ok in Jurassic park but please..carry the weight of Criminal Intent with Saffron Burrows..be afraid, be very afraid. October 17th, 2009, VDO halted all speculation and told fans everywhere that no matter what, he was leaving. The words rang out like nail on chalkboards across the world and shoulders slumped and heads were hung. The Grinch had stolen Christmas and it wasn’t going to be given back at a wonderful family feast. It was over….

So, Fluff campaign tents folded and went into a dusty attic somewhere and fans slumped back into chairs disgusted. The fight was not totally over though. An idea was hatched to say goodbye in style! Take out a newspaper ad saying Goodbye to the Heart and Soul of Criminal Intent! Ok..turns out there is a reason that only people like crazy man Tom Cruise can do these things; they are terribly expensive! So, the new proposal is to present the stars with “awards” from the fans. Check out this link! C’mon all you Intent fans and give a buck or 2. I have done my part and will continue to do so until the goal is met!! All my Twilight jewelry finding will go on Etsy and after fees, be donated to this cause! I am designing special Criminal Intent Heart necklaces that will again, after fees and materials, go to this fund! Here is the first look at one of the pieces. I will start listing them this weekend and tell you exactly how to locate the fundraise pieces!! Be a fan and fork it over!! Show VDO and Katie you really care!!

My Short Chat With Vincent D'Onofrio of Law & Order:Criminal Intent

This is actually a piece that I wrote for another blog after I had the great opportunity to talk to Vincent D'Onofrio Tuesday on WRXP 101.9 radio FM NYC. So, if you read it on the other blogsite, feel free to skip it : )

October 27th- I had the great pleasure of being able to speak, although , only momentarily to Vincent D’Onofrio this morning when he was an in studio guest on NYC’s WRXP FM with Matt Pinfield. Right before the interview, they asked that anyone with questions for D’Onofrio call in, so I figured, “What the heck, let’s try it”. Imagine my surprise when they asked me to hold on to be put through! Once introduced and put on air, I was able to tell Vincent what a huge fan of the show myself and my family were and asked him if he was aware of the enormous Fluff campaign mounted against USA Network in response to the cast shake up at Criminal Intent. How wonderful it was to have the DJ say that they had been deluged with calls and e-mails about his impending departure from the show! D’Onofrio did say that, yes, he was aware of the Fluff campaign and that he felt that the fans had to do whatever they felt right in response to the news. However, sad to say, D’Onofrio did say that he wanted to make it abundantly clear that he was leaving the show by his own choice; no network foulplay. I was saddened to hear that and again, the DJjs responded by saying that their bulk of correspondence with fans was to question the truth behind the departures. Hearing from the man himself, that it was his decision to leave, I suppose made it easier. D’Onofrio said that he has seen the episodes with Golblum and assured listeners that he though they were great. Ok..that is all a matter of opinion but I digress. I will say that, on a positive note, D’Onofrio said that his character was NOT being killed off and that he and Dick Wolf had been speaking for months about leaving the door open for a return. I shall pin my hopes and dreams on that. It was a wonderful experience to be able to talk to the actor that created a character I have grown to enjoy so much over the years. At least some rumors have been laid to rest and the idea of a possible return for Goren is hopeful. I was extremely excited but think I managed to keep myself together and sound coherent and intelligent yet passionate about the show we have all come to know and love as Law & Order: Criminal Intent.

My "Law and Order :Criminal Intent" Distress

Ok now, in the past I have tried to link all blog postings in some shape or form back to my sea glass business so I keep a trending theme. Now that I am home full time working at said business http://www.mermaidstears.etsy.com ok..there we go…I have little to no social interaction with anyone aside from my 2 dogs, whose daily routine consists of chewing up random socks, shredding plush dolls and sleeping on the sofa.(Note photo of dogs intently listening to me) Wherein lies my problem as the dogs do not react to my musings, outrages, quips or mutterings aside from the occasional head tilt if I make a high pitched noise. So, when it was formerly announced that Vincent D’Onofrio would be leaving Law & Order:Criminal Intent at the beginning of next season, my outlets were limited after my husband and son went off to their respective jobs and school. Was I upset? Oh..beyond words. I had eagerly anticipated the very first episode of Criminal Intent when it was announced that the “Mothership” Law and Order would spawn another spin-off. I was not one of those “grow to love it” fans. I was there from Day One. D’Onofrio, our modern day Columbo turned Bobby Goren into an intricate savant like detective, who I will say, I enjoyed in his younger, more “quirky detective with at least some sort of outside social life” than his “man this guy is all messed up with a badge” latter days. I mean c’mon, we all wanted to see him with a date or a trip to the theater or even a Mulder-ish obsession with “blue movies”. Though I know, some fans wanted to see a downright Goren/Eames lovefest, I was not a proponent of that! There is a line to be drawn. Isn’t there? Though, I must admit, the little devil sitting on my shoulder so wanted some sort of Nicole Wallace interaction. Oh, that, “she’s such a bad girl but I want her”-thing was so apparent to me. Ah, but my fondness for Nicole Wallace had to be reigned in as we did have to see the woman as someone who murdered her own child so perhaps that was a line that shouldn’t be crossed either! But I digress and my main issue here was my absolute distress over the loss of the only show I am rabid about next to Dexter!!

I cannot say I did not see it coming because a few years back when D’Onofrio collapsed on the set, I started to worry. How could the show continue with this going on? If he was exhausted, how would he return to the series for any length of time? Then, my ultimate dream was realized; the return of Mike Logan! Ok..if I’m not getting a full season of Bobby Goren, would I accept half a season of Chris Noth back as Mike Logan and half a season of D’Onofrio?! What a pleasure and yes, I’ll gladly take that. I will admit Nichols was never my favorite partner for Logan and I loved Alicia Witt but I’ll take what was given and love it! What a compromise! Then things started going horribly wrong…

Goren started to deteriorate into an outburst of angst. His schizophrenic mother was dying, his brother was a junkie, he got suspended from the force, THEN he finds out Mr. Jaws( “I think you are gonna need a bigger boat”) Roy Scheider, serial killer extraordinaire is really his father?? What?? What did this poor guy do to deserve this?? Nicole Wallace even went all “nice” and tried to save someone! What is happening here? I supposed the outcome…they were setting up D’Onofrio’s departure..how sad that I surmised correctly. Though, after last season, part of me hoped that, with his mother gone, and his brother and what??? They killed Nicole Wallace?? Oh no the didn’t!! Who DOES that??
I still do not believe she is dead. I can’t believe it. She is like the horror movie villain whose body is never found and constantly returns to kill campers. She IS Michael Meyers. She IS Jason and Freddy. No mortal man (or John Glover) can so easily dispose of her caliber of murderess. She lies in wait; I am sure, coldly plotting her return from “the dead”, where we shall all find that she had a twin sister or another daughter when she was 10 or some sci-fi DNA clone. Remember that her body was never found. I cling to that hope with all I can. Because no matter what VDO may say on the radio or in-print. Whoever is supposed to be killed off (my fear is that they will knock off Erbe/Eames and this will push Goren/D'Onofrio over the edge) and totally destroy our remaining hopes. There is always the “Mike Logan” syndrome. This is the one where someone, albeit it VDO or USA or NBC or whatever power that be realizes their horrific mistakes and decides to set the world right. Bobby Goren is frustrated and lost without police work and returns to the force. Hey , if Mike Logan can return from Staten Island, anything can happen. Freddie always comes back, Michael and Jason always come back and no one ever questions how or why. We are just happy to see them return. I can only cling to the hope that Goren and Eames and our dear Nicole Wallace are on hiatus. Stranger things have happened..geesh, Family Guy is back and Ghost Whisperer..What kind of a world let’s THAT happen and allows Criminal Intent become a USA “bon-bon and hot tea” series? Let’s not even talk Arrested Development cuz that was Fox’s messup. Change the name, change the actors, but please, without Goren and Eames, it is NOT Criminal Intent.

Rumors are rampant of firings, and killing characters off(gasp). Don’t you just want to bump into someone without their PR person in the street. ;like Erbe or D’Onofrio in Whole Foods, where, over organic chicken, you could say,”Ok, really, what the heck is the deal?” and get a straight answer? Not since 9/11 or the moon landing have I felt such rumblings of a giant cover up. There are some that know the truth and to coin another Mulderism :“The Truth is Out There”.

Look for updates here:

With Halloween just around the corner, and a weekend spent in some spooky places in Massachusetts, I felt some interests could best be served in a discussion on that topic. Now, although I had planned to attend the Sea Glass Festival in Erie. Pa this weekend, plans went asunder when my husband couldn’t take a day off of work and our trip began to encompass just an overnight stay somewhere. We opted for Gloucester, Mass, where my husband had never been and my son and I love. With just a 30 minute hop to Salem, world of witches and weirdness, I thought this was the perfect pairing for my sea glass adventures and my hubby, Ash’s (yes like that guy from “Evil Dead”) soon to be full time profession, host of a Paranormal Radio talk show, now available via podcast at www.theparafactor.com. This is where serendipity and “that Kevin Bacon” game started to fuse into some sort of strange anomaly!

Hey, I love my sea glass, love searching and finding it, addressing it’s characteristics and mysterious beginnings and in my blatherings, have found several people who, not only are fascinated by glass but also “other worldly” occurrences. My first run in with this was when I happened to browse at a fellow sea glass artists profile on an online selling venue and shockingly found her list of favorite books and movies were almost carbon copies of mine! We exchanged e-mails and have since become very chummy. Her delight in “Ghost Hunters” and horror movies that I thought only myself and a small spattering of mega Goth horror groupies supported was wonderful. Was it the artistic side of us that allowed the reach into the unknown or just a strange alignment of the stars and planets at the right time? I shrugged it off to happy chance but then more started occurring! Another seaglasser and I began to talk and she too, was fanatically interested in all things spooky and supernatural. And not just your, “Hey, did you see ‘The Blair Witch Project’ way?” and “Wasn’t ‘The Exorcist’ scary?” This woman was eagerly waiting for “Paranormal Activity” to be released and campaigning for its wide release by a major studio. Yet another “mover and shaker” in the sea glass world, who has made television appearances about his sea glass endeavors, has developed into a full fledged psychic with countless stories of spine-tingling ghostly encounters and has even worked with police on solving unsolved crimes, using his psychic skills! We fans of all things ghostly are usually lopped into a pool of people that live in their parents basement and stalk Robert Englund (Freddy Krueger) at Horror Conventions. Kids usually, wearing black t-shirts with a hatchet wielding harpy emblazoned on the front and spiked armbands, black lipstick and some odd plaid skirt/skort short that looks like a mix of “St.Trinian’s” gone uber Goth and detention hall at Catholic School. Though I’m sure these people are very nice…I am not one of them…I am a Mom, I am a wife, I live in the suburbs with a lovely son, two dogs and a cat and though I spend loads of time in the basement, I do not live there, nor do I have an affinity for plaid mini skirts though the whole “Naughty Schoolgirl” look does entice my husband but that is an entirely separate R-rated blog. But what’s with all these sea glass people??

We glassers who-ghost is becoming a phenomena unto itself. Now, I have found some strange coincidences and binds between myself and some other hard core seaglassers that involved the paranormal and psychic events but none so blatant as my adventure this weekend. When I first booked our stay at our favorite Inn at Gloucester, The Blue Shutters
http://www.blueshuttersbeachside.com/, one of the owners, Ed had called me a tad after our original phone call to tell me that he remembered me speaking of my husband’s radio show and thought he knew someone who my hubby might be interested in meeting. This gentleman, he went on to say, was an actual Ghost Hunter that investigated phenomena in the Cape Ann area. He would call him and set up a meeting. Well, to “Reader’s Digest” this seems that this gentleman, along with his wife and a few others are actual full fledged Haunting Investigators and TAPS affiliates! How great for my hubby to meet!! Then things started to get even weirder, when Ed, the Innkeeper was speaking to his Ghost Hunter buddy, he mentioned that I was the one that had been coming to the Inn on vacation and sea glass hunting expeditions. “Odd”, the Ghost Hunter said to Ed, “my wife is a sea glasser who designs jewelry too”. At the very time this conversation was going on, I was wondering to myself why all this conversation seemed like déjà vu …then I remembered a correspondence I had had in the beginnings of my Etsy career will a fellow sea glasser who lived in Massachusetts. I went through my e-mails and found just the one I was looking for!! When the call came back from Ed, I was right!! I knew this person!! We had chatted months earlier and now here we were, hooking up through our husbands with the paranormal angle!! Well, we were able to hook up that night and as the gentleman spoke on about their paranormal experiences, my fellow jeweler and I exchanged some great hunting spots, drilling techniques, best hunting times and all things sea glass. We had a great night and I hope that on our next trip to Mass., we can meet again and have a more formal get together!! But that was not the end of the night.

As our guests left and we headed for bed, other guests and Inn owners that had been in the lobby while we chatted with our friends, struck up a conversation with us that started with my affinity for glass hunting in the area and turned immediately to Ash’s involvement with the paranormal and experiences they had had. What is this strange connection between sea glass and psychic phenomena? Is it the lure and mystery of sea glass that entrances us and leaves us open to beliefs in other realms or just odd coincidences? I cannot think the latter because way too many glassers have commented on these types of occurrences or interests for me to think it just coincidence. I think the mysterious qualities of glass and its origins bind us together with a world of uncanny occurrences; like finding that red or orange glass and the lure of the unexpected…whatever it is, it intrigues me….Happy Halloween!!!!!

Names and identities of glassers withheld so as not to be considered the lunatic fringe. I however, have no fear of this …obviously!!

OK it has been ages since I have blogged and I have an amazing one coming about all the incredible stuff happening in my life and the business but this blog is merely a pit stop. Though I'd love to have more Johnny Depp banter about coming to my house to wisk me away..um..sorry..did NOT happen. Much to my chagrin. BUT...tomorrow, all you local folk check for me in The Bergen Record as I am featured in the Better Living section! Yea me and Mermaid's Tears Jewelry! Check out my Etsy shop at http://www.mermaidstearsjewelry.com and mention the piece in the paper for 20% off your purchase. Next blog will be very lengthy so be prepared but I have some awesome stuff to dish!!

Ok...by this point the entire free world knows I met Johnny Depp....sigh....ok, I'm back...so any way, I did a bunch of new pieces last night and listed them today on Etsy at http://www.mermaidstearsjewelry.etsy.com. I love my pirate inspired pieces but there is a small piece of me that worries that people might think I am headed to a more gothic style (which I love, don't get me wrong). Sea glass fans tend to like their pieces just adorned with sea shell charms etc but I feel it is all an art form and about the creative process. I love my skull and crossbones and pirate feel. Heck, I think that life must have been awesome. I just wondered what Etsy people and shoppers think. I want to do an entire vintage theme next as well and so, my shop will be entirely eclectic. I like so many different styles I just can't stay with one genre. Hey folk...gimme some feedback, or, as Bruce Campbell would say..."gimme some sugar baby.." Actually, be as mean as you like : ) Just don't make me cry. I've traded up from Bruce Campbell now anyway...sorry Bruce!!!

Ok..here is another shot!!

Ok..it is official…I have lived my dream of meeting Johnny Depp and did not throw up, faint, or make an idiot of myself. Better yet, I was able to present him with a sea glass pendant that my son and I made for him. I’ll keep the blubbering and blabbering to a minimum and relate how this all came to pass. Johnny was in NYC yesterday to film Letterman to promote "Public Enemies". I live in New Jersey and only a 40 minute drive away from the studios. After much debate and some failed “fool proof” plans, involving people that worked at CBS and knew people etc., my son and I had pretty much decided to dump the plan and not be disappointed. At 10:00 p.m. the night before, we started making a pendant out of black sea glass “just in case”. Heck, another Etsy friend "The Caravan" from California had sent me something to give him too and between that and my son’s disappointed face, I felt almost obligated to give it the ole college try!
We drilled a piece of black sea glass, added skull and crossbones charm for that pirate effect with sterling silver wire. Then we dangled a charm with a pirate flag from it and hung it from a leather cord. Very Depp-like. I’ve included the pic here.
At about 2:15 p.m. yesterday, still debating whether to go, we took the plunge! We made our way to the city where, for a change, the sun was glowing brightly and not a drop to be found of rain! I attribute this to the very presence of Johhny Depp and his ability to control the weather by his glowing persona…lol. Anyway, any good celebrity chaser knows that you have to make friends with the right people; security and police. So, after arriving to a throng of hundreds of people, exchanging pleasantries with said people to know, offering them bottled water and making clear to them that it was “all about my son meeting Johnny Depp”, we were told exactly where to be to make sure we got noticed and approached! Ok…let me back track here and say though it was a LOT for my son…but…I’m the one with the autographed photos and cardboard cutout in the basement!
Well, when the show was finally over and he came out he made his way to us, thanks to the very nice security man and we were able to present him with the pendant we made from the glass. He thought it was “very cool” and knew right what it was when I told him it was sea glass!! How neat!! I can officially say that Johnny Depp has one of my pieces! He handled the piece, admired it and I saw it go with him into his car! Now, his daughter may have it wrapped around a Barbie by now but it is still in the Depp possession and that is all that I care!! He was a gentleman, chatted with my son(pic #4) and high fived him!! It truly was surreal and when you look at the pictures, taken without a zoom, you will see why I am amazed that I stayed on two feet! All I kept saying was “Oh my gosh, his hair kept touching my hand !” Of course hubby had to know those details!! I can only hope now that this gracious man chooses to wear this piece in public and is photographed wearing it. It was a day I’ll never, ever forget!! My only disappontment is that we were so close when he came to us that I could not get a picture of he and my son together...ok...I'll survive that and live with the fact that he was sooo close. My son still will not wash his hand! And I can only hope that his entire family becomes sea glass fanatics and he will provide them all with gifts....from me of course!!! The magic of sea glass lives again!!

Sea glass is obviously an important part of my day and evening but I do put time aside for somethings…like “Lost”. Ok..I have been watching Lost since the first episode and we have had our moments. The first season was amazing and though there were a few annoying characters, on the whole, everyone was a keeper. By the second or third season, Jack had my nerves in a bunch with his “I’m a doctor so I’m saving the island” routine and Kate needed a hard smack with her whole “which one do I choose?” quandary. Um…Kate…have you seen the choices?…geesh…the blonde guy is the one..bad boys are always the best! Hence my obsession with Johnny Depp who will be in NYC next week to promote his new movie so I plan to meet him (I have my sources). You may, of course read about me on national news coverage but it might be good for business! There I go…off topic again…ok back to Lost. Fast forward to present day, which, if you are a Lost fan, you know can happen in the blink of an eye or a white flash in the sky. Now, I’ve dealt with polar bears, smoke monsters and mysterious cabins but you know you have Lost me when I contemplate the amount of sea glass on this island. Hmmm…when everyone is wandering around moaning and whining about being trapped in a tropical paradise with hot guys…ok, let’s forget about the smoke monster and “The Others”, do they pick up shatters of sea glass? C’mon, they are in a time vortex for goodness sake…they should have amassed tons by now! There should be stock piles of Dharma mason jars with all sorts of amazing finds. Think how lovely a nice sea glass stained glass window would be in a little palm tree hut? Just the thing one needs when underground magnetic fields are getting you down.

Need a break from worrying about groups of never aging villagers with torches and flaming arrows? Tired of pushing that button so the island doesn’t blow up? (Of course that is a mute point now isn’t it?) Remorseful over the loss of fellow survivors being picked of by each other and mysterious clouds of black smoke? Collect sea glass!

We all know they film on Hawaii so let’s pretend it is a similar island. Heck, Jacob has been bringing people to the island for centuries! He must have quite the jewelry studio in the foot of that Egyptian statue!

I think if everyone just took a moment, took a deep breath and just walked the beach for some glass; perhaps things would be different now. Kate might have been washed away while grabbing for a bit of cobalt and made me very happy! Maybe Jack would lose that ever prominent scowl and be happy with a nice piece of sea foam. They could have a little Sea Glass festival with “The Others” and peace would reign among the warring factions cuz sea glass makes everyone happy. And the show would be over and somewhere the writers and producers are asking “who let this girl out”…and me, I’ll keep collecting, and coveting that glass, and waiting for Sawyer to be on screen again. Sigh….

It's late and I have been creating, photographing, writing up descriptions and hawking in e-mails Twitter and Facebook all day. Waiting for it all to pay off. A nice cover story in Vogue would be nice. I think that would help build sales. Don't get me wrong, I'm doing very well but I want to be home every day just working onpieces of sea glass art that I love. Between family obligations, part time job , housework and the usual suspects..ugh..I'm tired...need a trip back to Disneyworld!!! Time for zzzzz.......

Tuesday, June 16, 2009

Well, not really by the sea shore cuz I am about an hour and a half from the beach but I've been crazy busy making jewelry with it today! I've listed some new pieces with neat charms and finding pieces. I don't want to be just another sea glass jeweler...I want to be THAT jeweler that does something different. I've done pieces that are suitable for weddings and fun earrings and lots of great colors. I need to work more with browns and ambers and green though because I just love those blues and tend to gravitate toward them when I start a new piece. Ok so this is just a brief blog to ask you to look at my new pieces on Etsy at http://www.mermaidstearsjewelry.etsy.com/ and my next lenghthy blog will be "Lost" themed. Just how much sea glass can you collect when you are on a beach in a time vortex??

Sunday, June 14, 2009

Beware: this sea glass blog is frightening and not intended for the weak at heart .I have to admit that the focus of today’s blog has changed dramatically. I had all good intentions of writing a blog about retailers trying to pass off faux glass jewelry as real and their convictions thereto. But, at 11:35 p.m. last evening, my entire focus shifted . There was a much more sinister tale to tell. While trying to look for an angle to tie an ad for my sea glass jewelry into an ad on my husband’s paranormal radio show website; quite the chore I thought, I was deluged by internet articles on sea glass and paranormal/metaphysical issues. One website was selling Chakra sea glass that was to assist in cleansing the Chakra and aide in strengthening ones aura. The ironic thing about that was that the sea glass was faux and made in someone’s basement so the healing properties of that truly escaped me. If you are selling something that purportedly was an element of nature, I don’t expect it to come from a rock tumbler.

My next find was a meditation page that used sea glass in the meditation process. Although this idea, I found had merit, I do not know the every day sea glass collector that just happens to have chunks of orange, golden yellow and red lying around. If you are one of these people…e-mail me, we need to talk about those nuggets..: ).

Still another site recounted a story of a young woman who had collected a batch of sea glass that, when brought into her house, evoked the feeling of dread and discomfort. It basically, haunted her home. Her explanation was that she felt the glass came from a pirate cache and that it was haunted by evil. In turn, she removed the glass from her home and the feelings of dread dissipated. “The Amityville Sea Glass Horror”, coming soon to your local theater. Of course, I have saved the best and truly the most remarkably horrific for last...

There is a seller on Ebay that is selling sea glass shards (the kind you or I would throw back because they were not finished “cooking”) that have supposedly been collected by dragons. No really…this is not a joke; you can do a search on Ebay and find this listing! The highlights of the article attested to the fact that this glass was well known to be collected by dragons…yes, like in Harry Potter…And I of course am picturing an enormous lizard-like creature strolling my local beach with a bucket and a piece of driftwood, beach hat, sunscreen and all. Yet, I digress, apparently said dragons live deep within a cave in the mountains of Russia, a well known sea glass collecting spot…ahem…they hoard this glass because it is known to have strong medicinal qualities and is enhanced by powerful magic by the dragon’s breath. The sea glass has been passed on to the seller by a “strange little man” from deep with Russia’s mountainous countryside whose family has been Keepers of the Dragons for centuries.. This now evokes visions of Elijah Wood and a creepy hairless CGI character, trekking barefooted to Mount Doom with a little golden ring…ok…my jewelry aspect has been attained. “The Hoard of the Things” Coming soon to a theater near you. Now how and why this seller has just happened upon this man is still a mystery to me except for maybe a GPS incident gone horribly wrong and a trip back to Best Buy for a return. But little man was found and glass passed on, then of course “cured” in a magical ceremony and now available to your local Ebay patron. Of course, you must be 18 years of age to buy this glass because of it’s immense powers and the seller is not held responsible for any misuse of power or injury caused therein. It's power can be harnessed but only by those truly knowledgable in the "magical arts" of faeries, goblins, poltergeists, etc. If you can believe it, this is just a bried synopsis of this listing. I have long been an Ebay fan before switching to Etsy and have seen the “Ghost in the Jar” issues and “Grandpa’s Haunted Cane” as well as the whole “Virgin Mary in Grilled Cheese” debacle but this…oh my….Though I must admit, since I have brought glass into my home, it has caused major disruptions to the calm here. The house has suddenly and inexplicably been turned upside down, things have gone missing, sleep eludes me, I am ever obsessed with thoughts of the glass, the color red is foremost in my mind, bits of glass turn up everywhere from the bathroom to between the sofa cushions…could my glass be haunted and empowered by magical abilities…??? What are those strange striations and dark colors in that English glass? Of course, it must be a disembodied spirit..for the pieces scatter throughout every room. Is this truly a job for TAPS? Shall I write "A Haunting in New Jersey"?!? Hmmmm.....No, I think I’m just messy and starting a new business…Though I have posted this picture of that strange dark mass in this English multi...hmmm...

Disclaimer: I do not own haunted, bewitched or otherwise empowered sea glass. This blog was for entertainment and just me being silly. That Ebay listing does exist though!! Search for it under "Russian Sea Glass"

It's 11:12 p.m. here and I'm ready for bed but inspired to write a blog about sea glass and the retail industries vision of sea glass. Faux vs. natural and my take on the public perception of this. This is what I sit up at night and compose....sea glass obsesses me..truly. But that is for tomorrow and the sofa is calling my name!

Well, it's yet another rainy day in Jersey and I wonder when we are gonna get some summer weather! By all rights it is still Spring but geesh with the rain already. I need to take pictures of my new jewelry to list and I love to use natural daylight. I took pictures the other day and there are raindrops on everything. I suppose I could call it ""effect" but it's just a pain. My drill bits still have not arrived so I can't even work on that. I need to buy a stash of them so they don't run out before it's just too late. As I always do. The only good thing about all this rain and stormy weather is that it will churn up some lovely sea glass for scavenging. That means a 5:00 a.m. wake up call for an hour and a half treck to the beach. Then the panic sets in to rush. Like kids at an easter Egg hunt, to scour the sand before the local hunters arrive. I'm an anti-social hunter. Do not talk to me when I'm sitting in a pile of yeck, combing it with my driftwood. I'm afraid to look up...will I miss something?...or will someone say.."oh look what you unearthed" and a virtual Jerry Springer, shoes off, grapple with ensue for that very piece we both want to claim for ourselves. Move along folks...nothing to see here...my pile..mine mine mine.Good Karma is all about letting it "go". Letting that nice older lady collect that lovely red for her granddaughter...but I want to see it handed over to a 6 year old that puts it in a memory box...cuz there is a little guy dressed in red and holding a pitchfork on my shoulder saying " She makes jewelry with that and just took the best piece on the beach you ninny..." I might not catfight for white but red...that is another story. And that thought will haunt me for the rest of the day....

Sea Glass Artists Unite!

I have to say that I joined the sea glass artists group at Ning called Sea Glass Artists and Collectors, and did not really have time to put my page together or really get the feel of the site. Yesterday I put my mind to it and posted pics and changed colors etc. While it still is a work in progress for me, I have to say how absolutely everyone has been there in only 24 hours! Comments have been so supportive and I truly feel I've met a great group pf people. If you are a sea glass fanatic or jewelery maker, it's the place to be to share and help others of "our kind". Go to http://www.seaglassartists.ning.com to join the fun and meet some great people. Here are some pieces that I made last night! Check out my Etsy shop at http://www.mermaidstearsjewelry.etsy.com for more goodies! Thanks to Lisl Armstrong for creating this group!

Sticking with your New Business

So I find myself at a small loss of what to write about today...my head cold is still kicking me down and I'm acting ADHD as far as working around the house is concerned. I even asked Etsy chatters what to write about but today I'll be simple. I'm doing my Good karma thing and positive thinking (though My Name Is Earl got cancelled so see where Karma got him?) I like my jewelry...I like my sea glass...I like my sea glass jewelry. Others seem to like it as well because business is good so far,so I think I'll just keep plugging along, think good thoughts and realize that every new business has it's ups and downs and bumps along the road. Will my business be just for summer because it's beach glass? Gee..I hope not because mostly I like to think of it as jewelry that has just been made of sea glass. Timeless...ageless and seasonless. Fight the good fight...the economy will look up and we will all start to prosper again!

Morning all...I have tossed and turned on this issue and so many of you have heard me speak out on Twilight and the people who use Twilight tags to sell. I have fought my inner demon and won. I did a lovely pair of red sea glass earrings...simple and elegant and will post tonight on Etsy. I thought for sure I'd put Twilight in my title...Twilight Bella's Blood...something like that...right? How many hits would that get??? Did I? No...I did not...I may have put the word in my description cuz they do look like droplets of blood but I did not "go there". My sea glass is untainted by the restless spirit that drives me into panic sell mode. My jewelry is pretty. People buy it because it looks pretty, not because it is Twilight inspired. Hey Drag Me To Hell had tons of blood and I did not mention that did I?I'm happy with my decision...ask me by Friday if I've changed the title though...still may get "lit" somewhere in there!!!

Talk about the pot calling the kettle black but sometimes Etsy chat frustrates me...I did the chat rooms years ago..that is how I ended up married to my husband...but when I'm in chat, besides discussing the occassional movie (yes, I do it all the time) I want to chat about what will fuel my business. The last couple of days, chat has been about children, grandchildren, ailments, etc....I want to be posted...I want to talk sales techniques and net-working...I do like to talk about Johnny Depp ok and I will do indefinately if given the chance. I like to talk about books and movies because you get a feel of who you are dealing with but today...mostly today...I have no patience. So I am kvetching here to myself and all who listen...make a chat room for Etsy Moms that want to talk or family group chat but when I'm on Etsy, I want to talk about sales, lack thereof or good sales days(yeah!) there is a place for everything and I have reigned myself in on the Twilight bashing...cuz my hubby is doing tee shirts but that is another chat. There are so many talented people on Etsy, show yourselves, help the others and for goodness sake, leave the puke conversations to whisper...off soapbox...closing blog...BTW~ saw Drag Me To Hell today...awesome...Sam raimi is back...now rush on to Evil dead Four and leave Spiderman in a shallow watery grave with Kirsten Dunst....

Good Morning World!!! I'm going to ad a new feature to my blog that highlight my favorite Etsy shops and their merchandise. I'm hoping that it will help my fellow Etsiers and myself by networking and introducing products to people who might not normally stumble on these great little shops on Etsy! Including my own : . I'm gonna start contacting those who I want to include and if you's like me to include your things for that extra added bump than please e-mail me your shop so I can take a look. I like very arts and "different" things. That being said, I'm posting some new pieces now and contacting my fellow Etsy friends for permission to publish pics!

Again my dilemma worsens as I have found gorgeous black sea glass to go with the blood red teardrop of Swarovski crystal I have. How gothic?? How Anne Rice...now HER books I love though I was dissapointed by Tom Cruise starring in the movie as opposed to yummy Daniel Day Lewis fresh from Last of the Mohicans (best kiss EVER)but Brad Pitt (fresh from Legends of the Fall) counteracted that. Though if the movie were realeased now and I had to look at crazy Tom Cruise(from my native New Jersey) and Brad, who, himself is a tad crazy with the psycho Angelina Jolie..I may have felt differently about the film. No, I do not have ADHD...just digressed a whole lot! Back to seaglass...so...myself and some fellow Etsiers have concluded that, as much as it might pain us, Twilight sells like hot potatoes. Why can't I have a Wolverine themed selection?...hmmm...maybe dogtags of glass...now there is a thought....keep on track ole girl... But face it, Twilight sells and I am broken...I will do about 3 pieces of vampire , goth, swallow...Twilight themed pieces and see if they move. At the moment I'm listing my faeries that I LOVE and hopefully the sea glass purists will forgive me for mixing whimsy and fantasy with recycled glass...

My Twilight Sea Glass Decision..without Matt nathanson

Twilight Sea Glass Jewelry...seemed like the thing to do...Bella inspired necklaces with hearts...maybe a crystal of red for a teardrop of blood...still not a bad idea. I am close to cracking and doing a few pieces to see if it increases sales. Maybe just do a vampire line...that could work! marketting your business has a whole mess of consequences I had never thought about before. The longer it has been since I've seen the movie the more I think...maybe I can do it...have just a few pieces. Hey, I want to do a whole Pirates of the Caribbean themed line and a punk line to tie in with skulls etc. Could it be that bad...since Matt Nathanson is not channelling me his response I have to go with my gut feeling...Sea Glass people love their glass raw sometimes but I'd like to change that...put a spin on it and make it a piece of absolutely artwork! I want to be different and not run of the mill...find a niche...you have to find a niche...check my work out at http://www.mermaidstearsjewelry.etsy.com Thanks!!!

Will Twilight Sell Sea Glass? What Would Matt Nathanson do?

Ok..moral dilemma(sp?)...at this point most folk know that I found Twilight to be banal garbage, fodder, useless...oops..I digress...does Matt Nathanson like Twilight? I wonder cuz I love him and respect his opinions cuz he watched Van Helsing and you have to LOVE someone that does that...why did everyone hate that?...digressing again...I find that people on Etsy that do Twilight inspired things sell....I need to ask myself if I am willing to sell out...claim I like this heinous mess..ok, don't know the book but movie was God-awful...with Star Trek out there how can anyone think Twilight was good if they are older than 12 and not a girl??? Oops..there I go again...what would Matt Nathanson say??? BTW- Buy his music, he is a fabulous musician and deserves more recognition...digressing even further... Anyway...if I list my sea glass designs with Twilight somewhere in the title, they get more views...what if I listed them with Johnny Depp (A God among Men)...would that still work...I need to sell like crazy..I want my life to be about making sea glass jewelry and seeing superhero and horror movies...not selling perfume...so what do I do??? Do I sell out, grit my teeth and say I love Twilight while holding my fingers crossed behind my back...what would Matt Nathanson do? Maybe he'd buy some jewelry???At http://www.mermaidstearsjewelry.etsy.com/

Disney Dollars in Sea Glass

Ok...Just back from Disney World last night with a God awful head cold and Disney detox setting in!!! So I started listing new stuff on Etsy and need it to sell to pay off my trip...new sea glass jewelry in shades of green for ya at http://www.mermaidstearsjewelry.etsy.com. Check it out and BUY SOME please : ). Ok...in the interim I have missed a Law and Order Criminal Intent with Bobby Goren AND harper's Island cuz let's get one thing perfectly straight...when you are in Disney, the folks there ONLY want you watching Disney so they restrict your tv to like 5 stations that are...all about Disney..things to see there...things to buy there...etc. Ok so it was Star Wars Weekend and that was way kewl and my son just about wet himself in excitement of the day (he's 12 so totally unacceptable ok?) So that day was awesome. While there ya gotta do Universal and Islands of Adventure if just to do Spiderman and Men In Black. We decided to check out a movie at the AMC POSH theater at the City Walk there...$6.50 was never so well spent...high back chairs and even a bar area. So we go in and there is a giant Johnny Depp cut out for Public Enemies that I just about ran out the door with...when you take a picture at a certain angle it looks like he is actually standing there...this is where I just about wet myself! Ok so we see Star Trek again ..well, for my son and I, my friend that was with us had never seen it and it was extremely amazing AGAIN...all the time threatening to go see Drag Me To Hell in theater next door to my son cuz I soooo want to see that!!! Why am I sounding like a Valley Girl?? The 80s days are catching up with me...ok,,,time for homework and more cold meds!!!

Thursday, May 21, 2009

Ok..so I'm preparing for Disney and wondering if they will throw me out if I stand at the front gate and hand out my cards for my sea glass jewelry business. My son thinks undeniably yes but I think if I give each guard one a piece of said jewelry, they will look the other way. Bribery goes a long way. Really though, I'm taking tons of my jewelry to wear and make my friend wear so that when someone say...that's nice...we will slam them with a card. I need to make this work. If I have to spend another year as a fragrance stalker at Nordstrom, I'll retch. I wandered around today thinking...hmmm...I could be doing about 12 pieces of jewelry instead of treading these stinking marble tiles pushing fragrance on passersby. My job could be cut at any second. It's happening everywhere! Bills however, force me to stay until I am cut and hopefully build my business into an Empire...ok, maybe not an empire, maybe a small community of 3...as long as it pays the bills!!! Check out my new things at http://www.mermaidstearsjewelry.etsy.com.

Lost has Lost me spoiler alert

Ok...so I watched Lost on Demand while I was YET AGAIN making my sea glass jewelry that some day soon will make me incredibly rich and send my son to college...yet I digress...c'mon..can't someone kill Kate..hmmm...well, in a way, Juliette did by exploding the whole island with an h-bomb!!! I truly cannot stand Kate or jack anymore...only Sawyer still has my attention..yummy...I have watched since first episode but interest is waning...perhaps because I watch and work and on Lost if you blink or look down to attach a bead...you are thrown back 30 years into the past!! Weird eh?? Ok...enough late night ramble...to bed with thee!

Red Sea Glass in honor of Harper's Island...Blood Red

Ok...I will get the feel of this at some point and learn how to Blog properly...I actually did my red sea glass piece that I just listed on etsy in honor of Harper's Island tonight...BUUUUUT...some fools at CBS have moved the darn show AGAIN and I can't find my spatter mainstream show...there is always some shade of red floating around that show...me loves the 20 somethings Friday the 13ish show...must go find what they have done with it!!! Look again fellow Bloggers

Red Picture

Perhaps a photo would be nice!!!

Red Sea Glass is my favorite!

Been a few days since I posted so let's update things...I am going mental as I happily got an order for 100 pieces on Thursday!!! Yeah...Gotta get them done by Thursday before I go to Disney ...so if anyone local would love to have me buy them a beer for drilling sea glass or threading chains through bails,...stop on over!!!! I put some new things on Etsy at www.mermaidstearsjewelry.etsy.com and I really like the gorgeous red sea glass piece I made...wanna keep...gotta sell...on that note I must get back to drilling sea glass...look at my stuff....PUHLEEZE!!!!!!

Sea Glass Completes Me

Rather shocking that I'm using a line from a Tom Cruise movie as a blog title as I am on an official "Crazy Tom Cruise" boycott. Ok...except for Legend and Interview with a Vampire and I was forced to suffer through him in Tropic Thunder because I wanted to see the movie BUT on the whole...we are an army of many vs. Tom Cruise...apart from THAT...my sea glass day has started and I'm drilling away praying that my new drill bits come in before this one has seen it's day and trust me...it's ready to kick the bucket. Perhaps if I am extremely gentle with it it will be nice to me and last till Wednesday when I expect my new bits!! I am such a procrastinator with those things...order early BEFORE you run out. My first Etsy week was alright with 7 sales and people signing up as a favorite. This week, I'm going all out and trying to list 30 to 50 pieces!! Hey, I see other people do it why can't I? Um...perhaps because I still work at a retail nughtmare job AND have a kid AND an EXTREMELY messy house...Oh great Etsy God...please let me sell loads and loads so I can just work at home 17 hours a day with my wonderful glass....Hey, I sell to stores too but at least I feel some sense of control over Etsy. "Really?" a voice in her head says. Well...at least I control how much I list, my prices, and my constant neurotic checking every 10 minutes to see if something sells. I want to be that person that lazily checks their e-mail and sees 10 items sold. Ok...the economy is tough...but there should ALWAYS be money for sea glass!!! Ok..back to work,,..I had my break yesterday when we saw Star Trek (Great!!) and nooooo...I am not a fan girl though I have nbeen known to hit the occassional horror convention...better when Bruce Campbell is there though I feel he may be straying the way of the pompous celebrity "I don't do autographs" thing,...Um..no offense cuz we still love you....but being Sam Raimi's friend is NOT a claim to fame.... Have I mentione http://www.mermaidstearsjewelry.etsy.com/? There ya go!!!!

Friday, May 8, 2009

First, let me say that I AM a tad disappointed at my font choices...I love my Blackadder (yes, and the show with Rowan Atkinson..look at Hugh Laurie in that!!!) and my curlz..though not always appropriate for clear reading but then again, I am not always appropriate. Ok..so it is my first week selling on Etsy and things are pretty good! A few sales here and there and a neurotic panic over what I can do to increase sales...My patience level is not at all where it should be but heck, I need to make this sea glass jewelry business work!! The economy is awful and I start a business. What provoked me??? Perhaps the fact that making jewelry is what I LOVE to do ...and the fact that beside siding my house with it, I have so much glass all over the place, I have to put it to good use. My family is disgusted with it being EVERYWHERE...suddenly I'll here a "tick" on the hard wood floor and know that my little Shiba Inu has denounced her shredded Shrek toy for a piece of my glass...yelling ensues as she crawls under the sofa with it and just looks at me like "Ya know ya want it....come get some..." I cannot reach her and my Lab Retriever just sits there looking at me like "it was all her...I did nothing...really..." I actually think that it is a plot to get the little one in trouble as she is the newbie in the house and inside my Lab's head is a little lab dressed in a devil suit, pitchfork and all, snickering...yet I digress! Yup...gonna make a business...yup, gonna make it work, yup...gonna make that sea glass jewelry and LOVE it and...and...why the heck am I using the word "yup"? Check out my stuff at http://www.mermaidstearsjewelry.etsy.com/ and let me know what you think!!! I am giving a $5.00 off coupon with any purchase of $40.00 or more...just mention this blog!!! Uh oh...she's under the couch again...gotta go!!

Thursday, May 7, 2009

Ok since this is my very first blog and I will look back months form now and cringe at mu incompetency...oh dear lord there is no spellcheck....ok, there I found it. Bear with me folks as I get used to this thing called blogging that apparantly I must do to become noticed on the web! I am a jewelry designer in this horrible economy and want desperately to do jewelry ALL the time...day, night, during my On Demand movies and on vacation. I am obsessed and determined to "make it work". I also have another job so all this advertising on the web etc. will just have to wait. My other job distracts me...encompasses me and withholds me from my true calling. The calling of the glass....the calling of the sea glass and the jewelry made thereof. I WILL make it!! I will keep my prices reasonable and appeal to everyone and I will TRY not to curl up in a ball and cry at the frustration this "new business" thing evokes. Ok...try...not PROMISE. That being said, my site is mermaidstearsjewelry.com OR mermaidstearsjewelry.etsy.com (there is more stuff on there). See, my husband does my website and since he is always busy working on his Paranormal radio podcast that has now taken over our basement living quarters, I need to be able to do online selling myself. Etsy I can navigate...my website I have NO clue about so those pieces are probably headed for the nursing home of sea glass. You know, my hubby complains about my glass being everywhere but heck, one room in my family area is now a soundproof recording booth. It USED to be a spare bedromm but now looks like something from the Dharma initiative on LOST....heavy solid door painted black, eggcrate foam on the walls for soundproofing...very professional. I , however, am convinced it has been done so he cannot hear me yelling his name when I need help on the computer!!! Ok...gotta get to my other job so I can gather round the tv with my glass making goodies and watch my comedies tonight!!! Guilty pleasure Harper's Island moved to saturday...blast.....
